Joint Statement on Racism

Picture
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
“All mankind is from Adam and Eve. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a non-Arab have any superiority over an Arab; a white has no superiority over a black, nor does a black have any superiority over a white; [none have superiority over another] except by piety and good action.”
- Prophet Muhammed (Peace Be Upon Him-PBUH)

This is one of the last pieces of wisdom that Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) gave us in his final message. In light of recent events, this message rings especially true. George Floyd is not the first black person to be murdered due to the color of his skin in this country. This tragedy is terrible, but even more horrifying is that it is not unique. Many other black people have been killed for the color of their skin. Their lives have systematically been treated as inferior, which goes directly against our beliefs.

Allah has decreed that all of mankind come from one place and are equal except for two things: Piety and Action. Thus, we must take action in the wake of this horrific crime. It is imperative that we do all that we can to apply our teachings and beliefs to the real world. This means fighting racism side by side and doing what we can to make our society equal for all. We understand that the COVID-19 Pandemic may have limited our ability in many ways, but we implore everyone to do what is in their capacity.

We must engage in conversations with our children about race relations, equality, and civic duties. This must happen not only at home, but in our schools and places of worship. Collectively our dialogues must reach across the social spectrum. We must use our unique abilities to make our voices heard. This includes speaking, writing, or protesting. Moreover, the ballot must overpower the bullet: vote for representatives that will listen to our voices and will work with us to implement institutional change.  Allah is the all-seeing and the most merciful; we will be rewarded for the good deeds in this life no matter how small.

We profoundly express our sadness to the family and friends of George Floyd and all the other victims of this injustice. As a Muslim community, we condemn the continuing subjugation and degradation of human beings based on their race and ethnic background.  We ask our creator for forgiveness and guidance to do better in this life and to be prepared for the hereafter.

Allah subhanahu wa taalaa says in Surat Alhujurat (Chapter 49):
“O mankind, indeed We have created you from a male and a female and made you nations and tribes that you get to know one another; indeed, the most gracious/noble amongst you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you; indeed, Allah is Knowing and Aware.”

Guidelines for the State of Pennsylvania
Governor Wolf has released a plan to reopen Pennsylvania and to start lifting stay-at-home orders beginning May 8, 2020. This will occur in three phases (red, yellow, and green) and certain precautions must be taken in each stage. Regions of the state may move from the red phase to the yellow phase if averaging less than 50 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents over a 14-day period.
It was then further announced on 5/29/2020 that that most counties in southwestern Pennsylvania, including Allegheny, are to be designated as green June 5, which further allows their economies to reopen and with fewer restrictions. However, CDC guidelines are still encouraged to be observed.
